Our Learning Approach
At Meadowlark Schools, our learning environment reflects our belief that children are inherently curious, seek relationships with others, and construct their knowledge and understanding of the world through their active engagement with their environment and the people, materials, and experiences within it.
Young children who attend Meadowlark Schools get the tools and support they need for their healthy development. All activities are carefully designed to adequately nurture the emotional, intellectual, and physical growth of our kids. Through stimulating situations and hands-on learning opportunities, children are free to develop into bright young minds.

Nature-Based, Play-Centered Education
Our approach embraces nature as a primary learning environment. We believe children need regular connection with the natural world and opportunities for unstructured play to develop properly. Research in child development shows that play is children's most important learning medium, helping them develop physically, cognitively, socially, and emotionally.
We recognize that between the ages of two and six, children—especially young boys— need opportunities for vigorous physical activity. When children are allowed to run, jump, climb, and engage in "risky play" (age-appropriate challenges like climbing, balancing, and using real tools with supervision), they develop confidence, coordination, and risk assessment skills that serve them throughout life.
At Meadowlark, children play outside in various weather conditions, connecting with nature's cycles and developing resilience. This approach helps them expend energy in healthy ways, leading to better focus, improved behavior, and more successful rest times.

Our Farm-to-School Connection
As we develop our 50-acre farm property located near our original Hollister campus, children will have increasing opportunities to connect with agricultural experiences. This working organic farm will eventually become Meadowlark Farm School, providing immersive learning about food systems, animals, and sustainable practices.
The farm connection enhances our nature-based curriculum by adding agricultural experiences and direct food connections. Even before the farm is fully operational, we integrate gardening, food preparation, and agricultural concepts into our program.
Nutritional Approach
Our students come from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds. We honor and celebrate that diversity by fostering an inclusive environment that respects each child’s home life and heritage.
Our nutritional program emphasizes healthy, vegetarian options to expose students to a variety of foods. We ask families to provide lunch, ensuring each child has something they are accustomed to eating midday. For snacks, Meadowlark Schools offers natural, whole foods—avoiding processed choices whenever possible.
This approach to food and nutrition reflects our broader philosophy: connecting children to natural systems, promoting healthy living, and nurturing a lifelong appreciation for wellness—while always honoring cultural individuality.
